FAQ

What does "E-C" represent?

"E-C" stands for "Empower Communication," indicating that our mission is to provide powerful communication services to help our global clients have a successful launch in their target markets.

Who are BEC's employees?

The key to BEC's success is our capable in-house staff. All team members have accumulated many years of translation/localization experience and are technical experts who are familiar with the fields they are working in.

Why does BEC keep such a big in-house team?

Some of our projects are very big, with several million words to be translated, and more than 20 to 30 team members will work for five to six months to finish them. All team members need to share the same translation memory database over a local network to maintain translation consistency for software UI and terminology. At the same time, face to face communication is absolutely essential to ensure good quality. The best way to realize these goals is to use a big in-house team. Although the cost will be higher, the resulting quality is worth it. We believe that our large in-house team is one of the reasons that we enjoy such a good reputation for quality.

Does BEC use machine translation?

No.
BEC never uses machine translation. We believe that translation is a creative process, and that good quality requires not only language skills (in both the source and target languages), but also technical experience and knowledge. However, we take advantage of translation memory database technology, which will help to save money, improve quality, and ensure consistency.

Does BEC provide translation memory?

Yes, if required. Please specify the name of the tool and its version. We regularly use TRADOS, SDLX, Catalyst, Star Transit, TM/2, and TTT for PC. We have also developed tools to convert between different translation memory formats.

Does BEC provide hard copies for document translations?

If the volume is large, we will charge for hard copy delivery, because the cost for postage is very high in China. If a hard copy is required only for quality review, we strongly suggest using PDF format that will allow you to review our translation without installing any other applications on your computer or changing your operating system.

How can I review Chinese characters on my computer without changing my operating system (OS)?

You can install an application such as RichWin 97 or NJStar on your computer. These applications can help you switch between English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, and some even enable you to review Korean and Japanese. If your system is Unicode, you only need to install Chinese fonts to review Chinese characters. If you have none of these applications, you can still review Asian characters in PDF or EPS format, but the Chinese font needs to be imbedded in the PDF.

How do you establish new terminology?

New terminology is established based on the standards of the China National Technical Committee on Terminology for Standardization (CNTCTS), and complying with ISO/TC37. For terminology that has not been released by CNTCTS, BEC will consult related experts and submit it to CNTCTS for standardization reference.

How do you organize a terminology database?

BEC's terminology database is sorted by clients or organized by specialties, and it also serves as an online terminology database. Our terminology database has more than 7 million entries, and includes specialties of mechanization, IT, telecommunication, chemistry, power and energy, automobile, aero-techniques and space techniques, finance and economics, medical and life sciences, etc, and as many as 20 specialties are included. The database is available in several formats: MS Excel, Translation Memory, Multiterm, and online glossary based on client's requirements.

How do you create a glossary?

Here we will use creating a glossary for document translation as an example:

1. The glossary will be created with the help of the tool SmartTerm developed by BEC. SmartTerm can extract key words from documents based on the frequency of appearance and specified specialty terminology, and can also add, modify and merge glossaries.
2. Manually adjust the term list by adding and deleting some terms; sort them in alphabetical order; location information (file name) is also included.
3. Search for the key words in all documents, and translate them based on terminology standards and the BEC terminology database, make sure translations are right at all locations they appear. If there are different meanings at different locations, translate them differently in the glossary accordingly.
4. Save in Excel format in alphabetical order or convert the glossary into TMX format for the convenience of looking-up with CAT tools.
5. Deliver it to the client for confirmation.
6. Improve the glossary based on client's comments.
7. Convert into online search if applicable.

We maintain different terminology databases for different clients. For example, we have a printer glossary, but some terms used by HP may be different from those used by Canon due to localization history; these terms will be marked with a client attribute to distinguish the difference.

Do you have formatting/desktop publishing (DTP) standards?

Yes. We developed the BEC Localization Style and Format Standards based on the Chinese Publication Format Standard (GB).
Most of our clients like to follow the format style, but some clients want to keep the same style as the source language format (or DTP layout). Actually, the format style of the source language is generally not conducive to the Chinese layout standard; leaving two spaces at the beginning of each paragraph in Chinese documents is just one example.
